DrawingML is the graphics markup language used in Office Open XML documents. Unlike the standalone WordprocessingML and PresentationML languages which represent docx and pptx documents, DrawingML is always embedded inside another mark-up language as content. DrawingML is used throughout all Office Open documents to display vector graphics, from text effects to complex 3D charts.

In this article we are going to examine how to generate simple DrawingML shapes. The application that we’re going to build iterates on a previous Open XML Developer application, a Silverlight Word document generator. We’ll and add a simple painting surface to Silverlight and render the shapes drawn in Silverlight as DrawingML graphics to the final generated document.

The Markup Compatibility and Extensibility specification contained in part 3 of the IS29500 Open XML specification provides a mechanism for implementers to add and interpret their own markup to an Open XML document while maintaining backward compatibility with existing clients.

In this lab you will learn about Markup Compatibility and Extensibility in the context of the relationship between Microsoft Office 2010 and Microsoft Office 2007. You will see how Office 2010 emits certain MCE constructs to provide up-level constructs for Office 2010 and legacy constructs for Office 2007.

You will then look at how the Open XML SDK 2.0 helps support working with MCE by pre-parsing MCE constructs based on a given Microsoft Office version.

The Open XML SDK 2.0 provides a set of .NET APIs to manipulate Open XML format files. It provides not only mechanisms to manipulate Open Packaging Convention (OPC) files but also strongly typed access to the underlying WordprocessingML, SpreadsheetML and PresentationML content.

Unlike Office Automation, the use of the Open XML SDK is fully supported in server side environments. This makes the use the SDK a most appropriate option for highly scalable server side generation and editing of documents in a .NET environment. The use of the Open XML SDK is completely independent of Microsoft Office- you do not need any version of Microsoft Office installed to be able to use the Open XML SDK.

The Open XML SDK outputs standards compliant Open XML format files. This means that content that is generated by or edited with the Open XML SDK will be able to be read by any standards compliant Open XML consumer.

In this lab you will learn about using the Open XML SDK to perform common document manipulation tasks. You will learn how to create documents, to read documents and finally how to edit an existing document.
