Instead of using a physical ZIP file to store physically store the parts of a document, is it possible to use or modify the Open XML Format SDK to physically store a document's parts in a hierarchy of folders in NTFS or SharePoint?

i.e. What would it take to swap out the ZIP physical I/O used by the Open XML Format SDK for an NTFS file system based solution?
