batch conversions from docx to doc (and vv) can be done using wordconv.exe... is this possible? I haven't been able to successfully do this...

I guess the office compatibility pack that you mentioned will allow you to
open and read office 2007 files where ofiice 2007 is not installed.
It is not actually converting .docx to doc or vice versa.
