Are relationships ordered?

Hello, I'm designing my own file format using OPC, and I was wondering if relationships maintain order. For example I did the following:

I notice that rd2 is always above rd1 when I load that file. So is it that the relationships are ordered? Or is that just luck? Can I rely on relationships being in a certain order (i.e. if my project has a bunch of relationships to sub-parts, can I put the relationships in order to create the sub-part order that I want to display in my application?).

Hi,

Relationships are not ordered. If you will only have a single relationship with a given relationship type, then you can retrieve the relationship by relationship type. If you will have multiple relationships with a given relationship type, then you will need to identify specific relationships via the relationship ID.

I recommend that you follow the same model that Open XML follows - you may have implicit relationships or explicit relationships. If you have an implicit relationship, you will only ever have one relationship with a given relationship type. If you have explicit relationships, then you may have multiple relationships with a given relationship type, and then you identify relationships by the relationship ID. In Open XML, for explicit relationships, you will always have markup in the 'from' part that contains the relationship ID, which then identifies the relationship explicitly.

Hi Eric, I was 80% sure that this was the case but I thought I'd check to be sure.

Have seen those screen casts but had forgotten about them, thanks for the pointer, I've learnt more by watching them again.

Given that I'm writing my own file format using OPC, I was hoping to reuse the Open Xml SDK 2.0 Productivity Tool to help with diffing etc. However the file I've created does not open in it. Is the Open XML SDK 2.0 Productivity Tool looking for particular relationship types in order to open (e.g. schemas.openxmlformats.org/.../officeDocument)? i.e. is it a generic tool that will work with any OPC file format or is it purely for the microsoft formats? My hunch is the latter.

Hi Simon,

I am pretty sure that it makes assumptions that the file is an Open XML document. I have never tried it with other types of documents, but I am not surprised that it does not work.

If you need a tool to do diffing of packages, you might check out this:

This will probably give you a good head-start on making a diff tool for your format.

Another approach - you can convert your OPC documents to Flat OPC. Then you could use diffxml to compare the flat OPC files:
